Judoka Dayaris Mestre (48 kg) won the first Cuban gold medal of the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games on Saturday, in an exciting final against Argentina’s Paula Pareto, 2014 world silver medalist. Pareto has trained many times in Havana and the two know each other well.
In the quarterfinals, Mestre, Guadalajara 2011 silver medalist, won over Ecuadorian Diana Cobos by wazari, and in the semifinals won by yuko in Golden Score over Mexican Edna Carrillo.
Meanwhile, Gretter Romero (52) lost by ippon against Canadian Ecaterina Guica. Later, in repechage, she beat Jennifer Cruz (MEX) by wazari. For the bronze, Romero will face Diana Diaz (ECU).
Cuban Yandry Torres (60) lost the semifinals against the Brazilian Felipe Kitada by penalties, and will fight for third place against Canadian Sergio Pessoa.
