Marina Rodriguez made history on Monday as the first Cuban female weightlifter to win a medal at the Pan American Games after securing silver in the 63kg division.
In weightlifting contests competitors take part in two events, the snatch and the clean and jerk.
In the snatch, Rodriguez lifted 85kg and 89kg before failing to lift 91 kg. In the clean and jerk, she began with 110 kg and then lifted 114 kg. The combined total of 203 kg was enough to seal second place.
The winner of the event was the Colombian Mercedes Perez (103-132: 235) and the bronze went to the Brazilian Bruna Luana (90-112: 202).
Cuba’s women weightlifters debuted at the Pan Am Games in 2007 in Rio de Janeiro.
