Cuba’s Weightlifting Gold Sets New Records

Monday’s weightlifting results could not have been better for Cuba. Yoelmis Hernandez broke three records and took gold in the 85 kg men’s division. The multiple medal winner lifted 164 kg in the snatch and 206 kg in the clean and jerk for a combined total of 370 kg, defending the gold he earned at Guadalajara in 2011.

This time Hernandez lifted seven kilos more than in the previous Pan Am Games and also set the 85 kg division record. Hernandez is a silver medal winner in the clean and jerk from the World Championship in Antalya 2010 and won bronze medals from Paris 2011 and Wroclaw 2013.

His teammate Yadier Nuñez won silver, finishing right behind him with 364 kg (163-201).

Third place went to the Colombian Juan Francisco Ruiz whose total was 347 kilos (157-190).

Also on Monday, Cuba celebrated a gold in the men’s 77 kg division thanks to Addriel La O, who came out on top with a combined total of 338 kg (153-185) ahead of the Venezuelan Junior Sánchez (337) and the Colombian Jhor Moreno (328). Marina Rodriguez then became Cuba’s first female weightlifting Pan Am medalist with a combined score of 203, earning her silver in the 63 kg division.
