Richer Pérez gave Cuba its 32nd gold medal at the XVII Pan American Games with a win in the men’s marathon on Saturday, July 25.
Pérez finished with a time of 2:17:04, ahead of Peruvian Raul Pacheco (2:17:13) and Argentinian Mariano Mastromarino (2:17:45).
Pérez and Pacheco had a hard-fought duel from the 30 kilometre mark on, moving ahead of the remaining competitors. In the final metres of the race, Pérez was able to increase his speed and pull away from his opponent.
With Saturday morning’s win, the Cuban runner put his country three away from matching Brazil’s 35 gold medal count at the Toronto games.
